Making good food choices to break the Yom Kippur fast eases your body out of the 25-hour fast in a supportive way (your digestive system will thank you).

Here are food and drink ideas to inspire you to make healthy choices following your fast.

Drinks

Your body needs hydration (yes, more than food) following the fast.

  • Water: Drink water before you eat anything.

If you are the type that is bored with water, these options are for you:

  • Sparkling Grapefruit Water:  My 6 year old twin nieces introduced me to this sweet-and-tart sparkling water. It is delicious and the slim can is a nice design touch.
  • Infused water: Infused waters offer all the benefits of water plus the subtle flavors or the added goodness of real vegetables, herbs, and spices.  My favorite is cucumber mint.  What is yours?
  • Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Cocktail:  If adding fresh lemon and just a bit of sweet (honey, sugar, molasses, etc) to your water sounds delicious, you will enjoy this sour and sweet elixer post-fast. It is simple: apple cider vinegar mixed with honey and other optional spices.
  • Enjoy a warm and soothing Tumeric-Ginger Tea.
  • If you want just a bit of caffeine following the fast, this Biodynamic Black Tea has Red and Pink Rose Petals.  It is comforting and soothing (plus it’s kosher-certified).

Foods

After you drink, eat something simple and healthy to break your fast.  Simple (and not too much) food is best when breaking a fast so as not to overburden your digestive system.

You may have grown up with a tradition of over-eating before and following the fast.  We do not need to carry on this tradition as it does not serve our bodies, minds or spirits.

Plant Based: Plant foods are the best choice to break a fast.

Enjoy fruits, vegetables, starchy vegetables, roots/tubers, intact whole grains, and legumes such as beans, peas and lentils.
